Obesity

Overweight or obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. The sedentary lifestyle nowadays has increased the risk of obesity among youngsters. Obesity is diagnosed when your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher. Obesity  does not remain only as a cosmetic problem as it increases the risk of many lifestyle disorders.

Obesity is influenced by

  • Genetic factors
  • Environmental factors
  • Less physical activity
  • Dietary habits
  • Inflammation
  • Comorbidities/Illness
  • Medications
  • Lack of sleep

Prolonged obesity can lead to the risk of illnesses like Diabetes, Heart disorders, Hormonal imbalances, sleep apnea,  Osteoarthritis. etc. Obesity in kids is reportedly increased due to a sedentary lifestyle and increased use of gadgets for entertainment.

At Institute of applied dermatology, our goal of obesity treatment is not weight loss alone but weight management achieving the weight possible in the context of overall health.

Yoga, Integrative diet and gut health are considered while managing obesity. If the stress factor is involved then it can be reduced with counselling and homoeopathic influence. The person’s body mass index, waist-hip ratio, abdominal and waist girth is recorded and an integrative diet is prescribed and customized keeping in mind the comorbidities and food habits, and lifestyle of the person.
