Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD)

Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is a condition that is influenced by the hormonal levels in females. The hormonal imbalance causes irregularity in menstrual periods and can contribute to long-term problems like diabetes and heart disorder.

PCOD affects women’s ovaries, the reproductive organs that produce hormones like estrogen and progesterone that regulate the menstrual cycle. The follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and Luteinizing hormone(LH) that control ovulation will also be altered during PCOD. Androgen levels will be higher than usual.

The main features noticed in PCOD are

  • Cysts in ovaries
  • Irregular periods
  • Increased male hormones

Common symptoms noticed are

  • Irregular periods/skipped periods
  • Increased hair growth especially on the face and chest
  • Increased bleeding during periods
  • Acne
  • Hair on the scalp gets thinner and fall out
  • Pigmentation and darkening of the skin in the body creases like neck groin etc.

Management of PCOD involves lifestyle changes like a healthy diet combing with weight loss, Yoga, and exercises. This lifestyle change can improve ovulation and solve fertility issues in females. This also can lower the risk of Diabetes and Heart diseases.

At Institute of Applied Dermatology, the treatment starts with good counseling on lifestyle changes that need to be involved. An integrative diet is prescribed after knowing the food intake of patients.
